Jane Henshaw: Death of 'genuinely wonderful' Cardiff mayor a 'profound loss' for city

Tributes have been paid to the mayor of Cardiff after her death at the weekend.

Cardiff Council said Jane Henshaw died "peacefully" while "surrounded by family".

She leaves behind a "legacy of compassion and commitment to public service", the council added.

Ms Henshaw had represented Splott, a ward to the east of the city centre, as a Labour councillor since 2017.

The lord mayor of Cardiff is an elected position and its holder is given the courtesy title of "the right honourable". That honour is only shared with the mayors of Belfast, London and York.

Council leader Huw Thomas, who represents the same ward as Ms Henshaw, said the mayor's death was a "profound loss for Cardiff".

"She was a tireless advocate for our city and its residents, always striving to make Cardiff a better place for everyone," he added.

Helen Lloyd Jones, the deputy lord mayor, said Ms Henshaw was "a beacon of hope and kindness" in the community.

"Her commitment to helping those in need was truly inspiring. She had a unique ability to connect with people and make them feel valued," she added.

Bablin Molik, Ms Henshaw's predecessor as mayor, said she was a "great support" while she was her deputy in the role last year.

In a post on X, former first minister of Wales Vaughan Gething said Ms Henshaw was a "genuinely wonderful, kind person".

The UK government's Wales Secretary Jo Stevens also posted a tribute on social media in which she said Ms Henshaw was "deeply committed to the people she represented".
